THE CRICKET IN THALASSERY

Sir Arthur Wellesly, later Duke of Wellington introduced cricket in thalassery, sometime
during the last decade of the eighteenth century. He did not have enough players in his e
stablishment. He got his persons, dhobies who washed his clothes near the well
in one corner of the Thalassery stadium, fisherfolk from their colony and many others
to make up the numbers. It took more than half a century (1860) for the first cricket club,
Tellicherry Town Cricket Club, to be formed.
Cricket Stadium

In 1890, Tellicherry and Cannanore played a cricket match at Cannanore. Murkoth
Kumaran also took part in that match. Tellicherry team had walked to Cannanore
to play that match and returned on foot late at night.

In 1912 the first proper pitch was laid at Thalassery stadium by an Enlgish Engineer
Anson.

Cricket was not only a way of life but was also a leveller where people of all castes, c
reeds, vocations and class joined together. Most of the British officials like the Sub Co
llector, Collector, S.P., Managers of British comapnies played cricket with indians.
Those were the days when India had not entered the test arena, Ranji trophy t
ournaments and others that followed, had not been heard of in the country.
In November 2008, modern and exclusive cricket stadium developed at Conorvayal
was inaugurated. First Ranji Trophy match at stadium was on 03-11-09 between Kerala
and Andhra. Indian pace bowler Sreesanth played in this match.

BAKERY INDUSTRY _ Thalassery

BAKERY INDUSTRY
It is the tradition of malayalees that they accept any new ideas coming from overseas wholeheartedly extending both their hands. They have shown courage to experiment even in their food habits adapting to new styles. Instead of the traditional puttu, iddali and dosa, many of them have brought bread and jam to the breakfast table. Instead of serving the traditional ‘palada pradaman’ for the birthday parties, the practice of cake cutting is widely adopted.
The credit of introducing a new variety of food item into the inventory of tastes of Malayalee goes to Mambally Bakery in Thalassery. The bakery started Mambally Bappu at Thalassery in 1880 have grown into become a Bakery establishment with its roots all over Kerala now.
It was in 1880, the period when no one dared to speak a word against the wishes of the British. On the Chistmas evening in 1880, a guest came to their biscuit factory at Thalassery. It was Mr. Bown, a British planter from the cinnamon plantation at Randu Thara in Ancharakkandy. He came with a piece of cake and asked Bappu to prepare similar one.
Bakery
Bappu was seeing the cake for the first time. He had no idea of about its ingredients. The English man told him about the ingredients. Within a short time, Bappu’s culinary skills did its wonders. When the English man left the Royal biscuits shop he had given orders for a dozen cakes
Malayalis tasted the sweetness of cakes for the first time from, the Mamballi’s Royal Biscuit Factory, the first bakery establishment in Kerala.
It was Mambally Bappu’s eldest son Gopalan who started Modern bakery at ‘Mittai Street’ at Kozhikode.
Mambally Family took the bakery business further from Kozhikode to Thiruvithamkoor.  M.P. Karunakaran, cousin of Mambally Gopalan and brother in law Kanari jointly started Cochin Bakery at Canon shed road in 1939. Though there were some bakeries at Cochin on those days, the bakery items were not popular among the people of Cochin. Cochin Bakery however transformed the food styles of the people in Cochin. On those days, Cochin Raja’s car which came to Ernakulam for collecting ‘The Hindu’ news paper used to return with bread bought from Cochin Bakery.
Even from the Palace of Mysore King, people were sent to bring bakery items from Cochin Bakery. There is no need of searching for several testimonies to highlight the fame Thalassery secured in the field of Bakery art. The King of Cochin used to instruct that the items made out of fine quality flour rationed out to the Bakery should be reserved for their exclusive use. They used to receive orders from France for supply of breads aboard before the French Ships set out their journey to Cochin.

There were no star hotels in Cochin on those days and the owners of Cochin Bakery therefore got the honour of conducting parties for three Viceroys including Lord Mountbatten.
In 1940s Kanari reached Trivandrum with the fame of Thalassery bakery. He started the ‘Santha’ Bakery at Pulimoodu Junction. Later it was handed over to M.P. Krishnan, son of Mamballi Gopalan.
The fame of Thalassery bakery thereafter reached Nagarcoil. Here the bakery is still operating under the name Tops Bakery.
Thereafter they started Best Bakery at Kottayam on 15th November 1944. Thereafter establishments were opened at Changanassery, Thiruvalla, Chengannur under the brand name Best Bakery. The last bakery in the chain of bakeries was established at Kannur, near the railway station which completed a full circle in the long journey of establishing bakeries by the Mamballi’s.
Mamballi’s were very much particular about the quality of their Bakery products. These people from Thalassery however, did not attempt to produce their products in large numbers and commercially distribute under their brand name which finally resulted in gradual loss of their fame in this modern world.

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 2 (PTI): The coastal town of Thalassery in north Kerala has been brought under a heritage tourism project by the state Government with an outlay of Rs 198 crore. The project was approved by the state cabinet today, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters. Known as the town of three Cs--cricket, cakes and circus-- Thalassery in Kannur distict was one of the early settlements of the British in India, where they built a fort in the 17th century. Earlier known as Tellicherry, the town still has several imprints left by the colonial rule to attract tourists. The town is also associated with battles waged by native ruler Pazhassiraja against the British. Cradle of Indian circus, the town and the surrounding areas had produced a large number of circus artistes and also is home of the legendary martial art trainer Keeleri Kunhikkannan, hailed as father of modern circus in India. German Missionary and lexicographer Herman Gundert lived many years in a bungalow at Illikunnu near Thalassery, from where he compiled the first and still authentic Malayalam Lexicon. According to records, the first mdoern bakery in Kerala was set up in Thalassery by native butlers who learnt the art of European confectionary from the British officials they served. The rural areas around the town are famed for folk arts like Theyaam and Thira, performed in local shrines.

World premiere of Kerala Tourism film in London -Tuesday

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 18 (IANS) Kerala Tourism will launch its global advertising campaign, 'Your Moment Is Waiting', at a red carpet event Tuesday (Sep 21) at the Saatchi Gallery in London to a select gathering of glitterati, literati and business leaders.
Conceived by Stark Communications, the brand agency of Kerala Tourism, and directed by Prakash Varma, the campaign aims to make Kerala a must visit destination for travellers around the world.
The campaign, filmed in key locations in and around Thekkady, Alappuzha, Munnar, Thalassery and Kannur in northern Kerala, features upcoming model Miriam Ilorah.
Kerala Tourism Secretary V.Venu said the campaign was unlike any other tourism campaign.
'The film is cinematic in style, sophisticated and highly emotive. It is not the traditional slide-show of pretty pictures of places and people. We are reaching out to our global target audience of experience seekers. We know that the film will resonate and influence how they think about Kerala as a holiday destination,' said Venu.
The campaign would run in all of Kerala Tourism's major markets around the world from October 2010 until mid-2011. ' 'Your Moment is Waiting' will hit video sharing website YouTube in the UK, France and Germany, targeting nearly 50 million viewers,' Venu said.
'The UK being our main source market, Kerala attracts a lot of travelers from that country, and we feel that it would make great sense to reach out to this loyal and growing market by premiering the film in London,' added Venu.
Chairman of Stark Communications T.K. Harshan said, 'The film goes far beyond the realm of a commercial to capture the soul of Kerala.'
Kerala's growth in tourism has been phenomenal and dramatic. A decade ago, this small southern state, though awash with scenic grandeur, was virtually unknown in the international tourism scene. Today, it is a globally acclaimed tourist destination, voted as 'One of the Ten Paradises in the World' by the National Geographic Traveller in 2000.

hummer in india

General motors has made it public that they are looking at negotiations seriously with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. regarding launching the Hummer in India with
full fledged availability.
GM had admitted to this in Thailand at the plant opening for production of new cars. There have also been talks of GM selling their Hummer division to the Indian company but that idea seems to be far fetched for the moment. Although there are several automakers in Russia and also China who could be interested in such a deal.
The company has been reporting its worse numbers in their corporate history and is looking to raise capital with the sale of its assets.

The proposal for the development of the ‘Kannur International Airport’ received ‘in principle’ clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in February 2008. Government of Kerala is now in the process of floating a company for the development of the airport.

The state government has identified 2,000 acres of land for the airport and the acquisition of the land is in the final process. The airport project will explore other related projects like Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO).

The techno economic feasibility project envisages to be approximately Rs.1000 crores for the airport. When completed, Kannur airport would be the fourth international airport in the State after Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

ona sadhya

Taste of Onam in Malabar
It's time once again for the sumptuous Onasadya, the rich fare of delectable dishes that enrich your palate.
Each district in Kerala is a culturally unique entity. But surprisingly, the Onasadya all over the State has the same ingredients and flavour. Being so culturally and linguistically distinct, why did not Malabar develop its own way to tease the palates for Onam? Our research was rejuvenated by the revelations of Menoth Ramakrishnan Nair, an elderly poet who writes under the pseudonym ‘Ravanaprabhu.'
Mr. Nair recollected Onam during his childhood and the distinct flavour of the curries made of vegetables and spices. Once the Onasadya was done with, the remaining curries and rice were poured into one barrel and kept closed for four days. On the fifth day, the barrel was opened and the contents were properly mixed and served. Before you say ‘yuk!,' people normally eat a lot during Onasadya and many develop stomach ailments. This mixture, served on the fifth day, known as ‘pulunkari kanji,' is the best medicine for stomach ailments.
A very important constituent of Onasadya in Malabar, unlike the rest of Kerala, is ‘Pazham nurukku,' which is plantain fruits steamed and sliced. Another is ‘pala ada' or ‘poovada.' prepared as an offering to ‘Onathappan' on Thiruvonam day. This is made by steaming rice paste filled with grated coconut and jaggery inside the stalk of Areca leaves. A variation of ‘inchikkari' known as ‘mulakapachadi' is typical of Malabar. This does not have the major ingredient of the former, ginger. Instead, green chillies, mustard, methi and theel powdered and mixed in tamarind juice to form ‘mulakapachadi.'‘Narangakkari,' ‘inchithairu' and ‘mangakkari' are also typically ‘Malabarish,' Mr. Nair says.
Sumesh, a prominent restaurant owner in Kozhikode, added a small but unique item to the list of Malabar special Onam delicacies. The main ingredient of this yet-to-be-named delicacy used in Thalassery and its surrounding areas is a banana known as ‘aanippoovan'. The fruit is mixed with sugar and ghee to form a thick paste. It is further mixed with ‘pappadam' and served as a pre-meal dessert, thus carrying the flavour throughout the meal.
According to Sumesh, unlike in South Kerala, in Malabar, there is no surprise element if non-vegetarian dishes are served at the Onasadya.
In fact, chicken curry in various forms is an indispensable part of Onasadya here in many parts of Malabar, he said.

THE TELLICHERRY WHICH IS THALASSERY

The capital of erstwhile British Malabar, Thalassery has a prominent place in the history of Malabar as a military fort, trade center, port and court of justice.
In historical records, Thalassery is also known as Telicherry, Talakachery, Tasichery among others. There is no definite evidence to prove how the place acquired the name Thalassery.

There is a belief that Thalassery was the capital of several places and so it acquired the name Thalassery. There are references to a place called Dharmadam in old historical records but no mention of Thalassery.
People also say that Thiruvangad is the old name of Thalassery. Most places in the town come under Thiruvangad village. Even in the Thalassery Sub Collectors Office tehre is a plaque which says Thiruvangad.

The manual of administration of Madras Presidency Vol. II 1885 says the old name of this place is 'Shwetaranyapuri. 'Shweta' means white, 'Aaranya' means forest and 'puri' means town. There is also a mention is historical records that Tiruvenkad later became Thiruvangad. David Smith of the department of religious studies of Lancaster University writes in his book 'THe Dance of Shiva' that this was the place where the Acharya of Upansihads 'Shwetaketu' lived here which is why the place got the name Shwetarangapuri.

The fort build by the East India Company is an Thiruvallappan hill which was owned by Punolil Mussad. Thalassery actually started progressing after it became a trading centre in the old kottayam taluk under British rule. This happened in the 16th century.

There are some signs of Brahmin domination in the center of the town. But there is no mention of Thalassery in the old 'Talis' of Kerala.

Ramadan (Arabic: رمضان‎ Ramaḍān, Arabic pronunciation: [rɑmɑd̪ˤɑːn]) (also written Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan, Ramdan, Ramadaan) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn until sunset.[1] Fasting is meant to teach the Muslim patience, modesty and spirituality. Ramadan is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of God (Arabic: الله‎, trans: Allah) and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards about ten days each year as it is a moving holiday depending on the moon. Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were said to be revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.[2]

For Christian priest, Quran is as dear as the Bible

Sat Sep 12 2009 15:36:20 GMT+0530 (India Standard Time) by IANS ( Leave a comment )

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 12 (IANS) For 65-year-old priest G.S. Francis, the Holy Quran is as dear as the Holy Bible.
Church of South Indian (CSI) parish vicar Francis has been reading the Quran for an hour everyday during the fasting month of Ramzan for the past two decades.
“The Old Testament and the Quran are almost similar and I do read it every day for an hour during the month of Ramzan. In fact in the course of theology, the holy books of other religions like the Ramayana and Quran are taught,” he said.
“I learned theology at a seminary by attending a part-time course. It was in 1989 that I was ordained as a priest. The state government allowed me to don the cassock because I agreed to do the priestly duties as an honorary service,” he added.
Francis retired from the state government as deputy development commissioner in rural department a decade back and has been a priest in the church since then. The church is located at Thalassery in Kannur district.
He said during the month of Ramzan he fasts when he has no other duties to perform.
“It has become a practice for me ever since I became a priest to refer to religious books like Quran and Ramayana. This helps me to understand other religions. This reading helps me when I deliver messages in the church. One gets knowledge for preaching when one studies other religions because a comparative study is required and I am happy doing this,” Francis said
