Thalassery, also known as Tellicherry, is a city on the Malabar Coast of Kerala,India. The British established their presence in Kerala in 1682, in order to participate in the flourishing trade in the region and this town thus became an important commercial centre. They obtained the right to settle in Thalassery fromVadakkilamkur Prince of Kolattunad. The British built a seaport in Tellicherry through which a variety of spices such as pepper and cardamom were exported. The Thalassery Fort, which is now a historical monument, was built in 1708 by the British in order to protect and control the spice trade in which they had vested interests in the region.Thalassery is believed to be the first place that cricket, now the most popular national game, was played in the early 1800?s. It was introduced to the town by Colonel Arthur Wellesley, much before its introduction in Calcutta in 1860. Thalassery is also considered the birthplace of the circus in India. |
